Plumbing licensing
South Dakota's Plumbing Commission issues plumbing contractor, plumber, journeyman and apprentice licenses.1, 2
Heating and cooling licensing
South Dakota's Department of Labor and Regulation licenses plumbing but lists no heating and cooling license. Ask your city or county whether it licenses heating and cooling contractors.2
Plumbing and mechanical codes
South Dakota's State Plumbing Code is the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code with amendments.3, 4 South Dakota's State Fire Marshal has adopted the 2015 International Mechanical Code, which local governments may amend.5
Permits to replace a water heater, furnace or AC
South Dakota's Plumbing Commission requires a plumbing installation certificate (a permit) and a state inspection for all plumbing installations, except in cities with their own inspections: Aberdeen, Brandon, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Spearfish. For heating and cooling work, ask your local building department.6
