How much does a plumber cost?

The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes, we didn't measure them, and local prices vary. Use them to plan a budget, then get quotes from plumbers near you if you'd like to compare.

What it costs to get a plumber out

When you call, ask:

• Whether there's a service call fee, and whether it covers the first hour or comes off the bill if you go ahead.
• Whether the hourly rate has a minimum, and when the clock starts.
• What counts as after hours, and what the after-hours charge is.

What common jobs cost

If a pipe has burst, turn off the main water shut-off if you can. If sewage is backing up, stop running water.

For a leak under a slab or a whole-house repipe, we don't list a range. Ask two or three plumbers to look at the job and price it in writing.

Comparing quotes

Ask every plumber to put the same things in writing, so you can compare them line by line:

• What they'll do, and what they found that made them recommend it.
• Whether the price is fixed or hourly, and what would change it.
• Whether the service call, parts and cleanup are included.
• Whether the job needs a permit, who applies for it, and whether the fee is in the price. The permit guide covers water heater, furnace and AC swaps.
• What the warranty covers, and for how long.
